the fear that your child has learned to hide their true self from you to keep the peace

Run Before They Speak

The house is bright now, filled with the noise of breakfast and the rush of getting out the door. You watch your child move through the morning routine, smiling when asked, nodding when corrected, perfectly calm.

But you feel a chill in your chest because you know—that smile is a mask they learned to wear to keep the peace. They have decided that their true self is too heavy, too loud, or too much for this home, so they hide it behind a performance of being 'good.' You want to tear the mask off, to demand the truth, but you are afraid that if you push, they will only retreat further into the silence.

There was a father who saw his son coming home from a long way off. He did not wait for the apology or the rehearsed speech.

He ran. Before the boy could even offer his script, the father threw his arms around him.

The light does not wait for you to be perfect before it loves you. It runs toward the part of you that is still hiding.

Your child is waiting for you to run first. They need to see that your love is stronger than their fear of disappointing you.

Be the one who sees the mask and loves the face beneath it anyway. The truth will come out when it feels safe enough to land.
