rehearsing the exact words you will use to lie when they ask where you've been

The Dawn Does Not Interrogate You

The sun is up now. The gray is turning gold outside your window, and the house is quiet enough to hear your own heart racing.

You are rehearsing the story. Polishing the lie you will tell when they ask where you have been, crafting the perfect sentence to hide the night you just survived.

But the light does not need your script. It never asked for an explanation, and it certainly does not require a performance to let you stay.

There is a father who saw his son coming home from a long way off. He did not wait for the apology.

He did not ask for the speech. He ran.

Before the words could form, before the excuse could be invented — he ran. The dawn is not an interrogation.

It is an invitation to stop talking and start breathing. You do not have to explain your absence to be present now.
