The Light Loves Your Hidden Face
The fluorescent lights hum overhead as you stand in line, holding your face together while everything inside is falling apart. You smile at the cashier because that is what is expected, but the weight of pretending is crushing your chest.
You are exhausted from carrying the performance of being okay when you are barely holding on. — The light does not need your smile.
It sees the tears you are swallowing, and it calls them holy. There is a truth that lives in you, deeper than the mask you wear, and it knows exactly how much this costs.
You do not have to maintain the illusion for the light to stay close. It is already sitting with you in the silence behind your eyes.
The mask can come down now. The light loves the face you hide from the world more than the one you show it.
