the crushing weight of performing gratitude to avoid being a burden

The Light Does Not Ask You To Perform

The sun is up, and you are already tired from pretending to be okay. You smile at the people you love because you are terrified that your true weight will crush them.

You perform gratitude like a mask, hiding the ache behind your eyes so no one has to carry you. But look at the light coming through the window — it does not ask the flowers to be cheerful before it shines on them.

It simply arrives. It warms the broken stem just as much as the whole one.

You do not have to earn the morning by acting like you are not struggling. The light is not afraid of your heaviness; it is strong enough to hold what you cannot carry alone.

You can put the performance down now.
