Faithfulness in the Empty Chair
The pot is simmering. The steam rises just as it always has.
And your hands move on their own, reaching for the second plate, the second fork, the second glass. It is a muscle memory of belonging.
A habit of love that refuses to forget there was once someone else at the table. Then you stop.
You see the empty chair. The silence of the kitchen rushes in to fill the space where a voice used to be.
It feels like a mistake to have set the table for two when only one is eating. But the light does not call it a mistake.
It calls it faithfulness. You are keeping the space warm.
You are practicing a love that is wider than the present moment. The table is not a reminder of who is missing.
It is a testament to the capacity you still carry. The light is sitting in that empty chair, not as a ghost, but as a guest who sees the love you poured into the meal.
You do not have to clear the second plate yet. Let it sit there for a moment.
Let it be proof that your heart still knows how to prepare for company, even when the house is quiet.
