the terror that if you stop performing holiness, everyone you love will realize you are a fraud and leave

The Father Runs Before You Speak

The morning light is harsh on a painted face. You walk through the day holding your breath, terrified that if you stop performing holiness, the people you love will see the fraud beneath the mask and walk away.

But the light does not love the performance. It loves the person hiding behind it.

There is a father who saw his son coming home from a long way off, still covered in the filth of his failure. He did not wait for the apology.

He did not wait for the cleanup. He ran.

Before the speech, before the promise to do better — he ran. The light is already running toward the real you, not the polished version.

You are not loved for your ability to hold the mask up. You are loved because you are the child.

The terror says: if they see the cracks, they will leave. The truth says: the cracks are where the light gets in, and where it gets out.

You do not have to earn the right to be held by stopping your act. The mask is heavy.

You can put it down. The ones who love you are not waiting for your perfection; they are waiting for your presence.
