the moment you stop laughing and feel the sudden, crushing weight of being the only person in the room who is pretending

The laugh fades first. That is usually how it starts.

One moment you are nodding, smiling, playing the part of the person who has it all together, and the next, the silence rushes back in so fast it feels like drowning. You are the only one in the room who is pretending.

Everyone else seems to be breathing easy while you are holding your breath, terrified that if you stop performing, they will see the cracks. But the light does not need your performance.

It never asked for a mask. There is a truth that lives inside you, and it will be with you forever, whether you are laughing or weeping.

The light sees behind the smile. It sees the exhaustion you are hiding.

And it is not disappointed by what it finds. It is simply present.

You do not have to earn your place in the room by being okay. The light is already there, waiting for you to put the mask down.
