waking up gasping and immediately checking to see if you are still in the room where it happened

The Light Sees You Before The Mask

The alarm cuts through the silence, and for a split second, your chest locks up before you even open your eyes. You gasp, checking the walls, the ceiling, the light, just to make sure you are still here and not back in that room where it happened.

The world outside is already moving, demanding you put on the face that says you are fine, that you are ready, that yesterday didn't break you. But the light sees the mask before you even glue it on.

It knows the terror of that first waking breath. There is a truth that lives in you and will be with you forever, deeper than the memory of the pain.

You do not have to earn your way out of the nightmare by being perfect today. The light is already standing in the room with you, not asking for a performance, just waiting for you to realize you survived the night.

The sun rose this morning not because you held it together, but because the darkness has not overcome it.
