the terrifying suspicion that the new self is just a performance you can't sustain

The Treasure Hidden in Your Mess

The afternoon sun is unforgiving. It exposes the dust on the furniture and the cracks in the paint.

It exposes the gap between who you are trying to be and who you feel you are underneath. You suspect this new self is just a costume, a performance you are exhausting yourself to maintain.

But the light does not need your costume. It does not need the polished version you present to the world.

There is a story of a man who saw a treasure hidden in a field. He did not buy the field because he had perfected it.

He bought it because he found something valuable buried in the dirt. The treasure was not the soil.

It was what was hidden inside it. You are worried that if you stop performing, the light will leave.

— But the light is the treasure hidden in the field of your ordinary, messy, unpolished life. It was there before you started trying.

It will be there when you finally stop. The performance is the mask.

The exhaustion is the proof that the mask is too heavy. Take it off.

The light does not shine on the surface of your acting. It shines from the center of your being.

You are not the actor. You are the field where the light is buried.
