standing up to sing a hymn about a savior you no longer trust while your voice mechanically joins the harmony

The Light in the Mechanical Note

The afternoon sun is high, and the room is full of voices rising together. You stand.

Your mouth opens. The words about a Savior you no longer trust form on your tongue, and your voice mechanically joins the harmony.

It feels like a betrayal. Like you are performing a faith that has left the building.

But listen — the light does not demand your conviction to be present. It is in the sound itself.

In the vibration of the air between you and the person next to you. You do not have to believe the words to be held by the song.

The melody carries you when your legs give out. The harmony wraps around the doubt without trying to fix it.

You are not a hypocrite for singing while you struggle. You are a human being letting the ancient sound hold you up when you cannot hold yourself.

The light is not in your perfect agreement. It is in the simple, exhausted act of showing up and opening your mouth.

God is in the mechanical note just as much as in the triumphant shout.
