the quiet terror that your child will one day realize you were never really there

The Light That Runs Before You

The afternoon sun is high, and the house is loud with the ordinary noise of living. You are moving through the routine, checking the boxes, making sure the meals are ready and the homework is done.

But underneath the motion, a quiet terror grips your chest. The fear that one day, your child will look back at these years and realize you were never really there.

That you were a body in the room, but your soul was somewhere else. That you gave them your time, but not your presence.

In the middle of the day, when the mask of competence is heaviest, this thought feels like a stone in your throat. You wonder if the distance you feel right now has already become a wall they cannot climb.

But listen. The light does not measure presence by the perfection of your attention.

It measures it by the love that remains even when you are distracted. There was a father who watched his son from a long way off.

He did not wait for the son to be perfect. He did not wait for the apology to be polished.

He ran. Before the speech, before the promise to do better — he ran.

That running is the truth of your life, not the distraction. The light that lives in you is the same light that lived in that father.

It is already reaching toward your child, even in your weary moments. Even when you feel far away, the love is crossing the room.

You are not as absent as your fear tells you. The terror says you missed it.

The light says you are still here. And the child sees the love, not the lapse.
