The Face Beneath the Mask Is Held
The water is loud enough to hide the rehearsal. You are practicing the lie that will get you through the door, smoothing the edges until it sounds like the truth.
It is exhausting to build a mask before your feet even touch the floor. But the light does not need your performance to see you.
It sees the tremor in your hands before you dry them. It knows the words you are memorizing are not who you are.
There is a part of you that has never needed to pretend. That part is already known.
The mask is heavy, but the face beneath it is held.
