lying in bed rehearsing a defensive speech for a mistake you haven't been accused of yet, convinced they can hear your thoughts through the walls

The Father Runs Before You Speak

The walls feel thin tonight. You are rehearsing a speech for a crime no one has charged you with, convincing yourself that your thoughts are loud enough to bleed through the drywall.

But the light does not broadcast your fear to the neighbors. It hides you.

There is light within a person of light, and it lights up the whole world from the inside out—not by shouting, but by shining. You came from the light, the place where the light came into being on its own accord, and that origin is quieter than any accusation.

The father in the story did not wait for the son to finish his rehearsed apology before running to meet him; he ran while the speech was still stuck in the throat. Your defense is not required for you to be held.

The silence in this room is not an audience waiting for you to slip up. It is a holding space where nothing you have not yet done can condemn you.
