The Father Runs Before You Speak
The sun is just beginning to bleed into the sky, turning the dark into a soft, uncertain gray. You are still standing in that doorway, hand on the knob, rehearsing the excuse you will tell yourself later today.
But the night is over. The script you wrote in the dark does not survive the morning light.
There is a father who watched the road every single day, not waiting for an apology, but watching for a shape on the horizon. He saw his son while he was still a long way off — dirty, ashamed, empty — and he ran.
Before the speech could start, before the excuse could be polished, the father's arms were already around him. You do not need to explain why you were at the cupboard.
You do not need to justify the hunger that drove you there. The light has already seen you.
It is not waiting for your defense. It is running toward you.
The excuse is for the darkness. The morning only asks for your presence.
