catching yourself promising your child a future moment of presence that you know you will be too exhausted to keep

Light in the Broken Composure

The promise slips out before you even mean it. "We'll go to the park tomorrow," you say, already feeling the weight of the day pulling your shoulders down.

You know the truth: by tomorrow, you will be too hollow to keep it. You are trying to pay for today's absence with tomorrow's energy you do not have.

But listen — the light does not ask for your surplus. It does not need the version of you that has rested enough to be patient.

In the middle of this long, draining afternoon, there is a presence that meets you exactly here. Not in the future park, but in the current exhaustion.

You do not have to manufacture a better moment to be loved. The kingdom is already inside you, spread out on the floor where you are sitting.

Stop trying to earn your child's joy with a future promise. Just be here, broken and tired, and let the light shine through the crack in your composure.
