You Do Not Have to Pick Up
The phone buzzes on the nightstand, and for a split second, the room tilts. You stare at the screen, calculating the energy cost of pretending to be okay if you answer.
That calculation is a heavy armor, and you have worn it all day. But the light does not need your performance.
It does not require you to be composed before it draws near. There is a peace that does not depend on your ability to manage the call or the conversation.
You can let the phone ring. You can let the silence be loud.
The light is already in the room with you, waiting not for your greeting, but for your rest. You do not have to pick up to be held.
