The Mask Was Yours, Not Theirs
The morning light hits the table, and you scan their face for the crack you made last night. You are looking for the flinch, the new distance, the proof that your confession changed how they see you.
But they act as if nothing happened. They pour the coffee.
They ask about your day. The silence feels like a mask you both wear to keep the peace.
You wonder if they didn't hear you, or if they simply decided your shame doesn't get to rewrite the story. The light sees behind the performance.
It knows the terror of waiting for a verdict that never comes. And in their ordinary refusal to treat you like a stranger, you find the answer.
The relationship did not break. It held.
The mask was yours, not theirs.
