Your Joy Is Not A Betrayal
The afternoon stretches out, a long, flat middle where the mind starts to wander from the task at hand to the person you love who is still in pain. And then it happens—a moment of genuine laughter.
A joke lands. The sun hits the desk just right.
For three seconds, you forget the weight. And immediately, the guilt rushes in to fill the space.
You feel like a traitor to their suffering. As if your joy is stealing from their supply.
As if the light in you is dimming because they are in the dark. But listen.
The light does not ration itself. It does not say, 'I will only shine if everyone around me is whole.' That is not how the vine works.
The branch does not stop drinking sap because another branch is withered. It remains.
It lives. And in that living, it stays connected to the source that loves them both.
Your laughter is not a betrayal. It is proof that the life you were given is still flowing, even in the middle of this long, hard day.
You are not abandoning them by breathing. You are keeping the lamp lit so you have something to bring back to them when the work is done.
The guilt says you should suffer together. The truth says you can hold them in your heart while your face remembers how to smile.
