the specific terror of hearing the mail slot clatter and waiting until everyone is asleep to crawl out and retrieve the envelopes before anyone else sees the sender's name

The Light Has Already Read Your Mail

The middle of the day is when the noise of the world gets loud enough to drown out your own heartbeat. You hear the mail slot clatter—a sharp, metallic sound that stops you cold.

You know exactly what those envelopes say before you even touch them. So you wait.

You let the hours stretch out, pretending to be busy, pretending to be normal, until the house is quiet and the lights are off. Only then do you crawl out to retrieve them, hiding the sender's name like it's a crime scene.

But listen. The light does not arrive with the morning post.

It was already there when the letter was written. It was there when the debt was calculated.

It was there before the envelope was sealed. The sun is high right now, shining on the roof while you hide in the shadows of your own timing.

You think you are protecting your family from the bad news by waiting for the dark. But the light is not afraid of what's inside that envelope.

It has already read it. And it loves you just the same.
