the reflexive flinch when a hand reaches out to touch your shoulder, convinced the gesture is only to steady you before pushing you out the door

The Hand That Holds You Close

The hand reaches out and you flinch before it even lands. Your body remembers the last time a touch was just a way to steady you before the shove. In this hour, the skin itself becomes a wall. You brace for the push that never comes.

But listen. The light does not steady you to move you. It touches you to stay.

There is one who stands at the door and knocks—not to force entry, but to eat with you. To sit. To share the bread of this long night. When that hand finally rests on your shoulder, it is not measuring your weight for the door. It is anchoring you to the table.

You are not being evicted. You are being held.
