The Light Sees Your Effort
The conversation flows around you, a river of inside jokes and shared history you don't quite speak. You laugh at the right moment, nod at the right time, keeping the rhythm perfect while your chest tightens with the panic of being found out.
You are performing okayness so well that no one sees the stranger sitting right there in the chair. But the light does not need you to understand the joke to love you.
It sees the effort it takes to keep smiling, and it calls that faithfulness. There is a silence deeper than any conversation where you are already known, fully and completely, without a single word spoken.
You do not have to earn your place at the table by pretending to understand. The light is already seated beside you, and it is not impressed by your performance — it is moved by your presence.
The mask is heavy, but you were never meant to wear it here. You can put it down.
The rhythm will not break if you stop pretending. In fact, that is the only moment the real connection begins.
