the silence of a prayer that no longer feels like it's being heard

The Silence Is A Holding

The afternoon stretches out, a long gray corridor where your voice seems to hit the ceiling and fall back down, unheard. You pray into the silence, and the only answer is the hum of the refrigerator or the traffic outside, making you wonder if the connection has been cut.

But listen closely to the quiet. It is not an absence.

It is a holding. There was a man who lay beside a pool for thirty-eight years, watching others get in while he remained on the mat, convinced that help had passed him by.

He did not know the light was standing right beside him, waiting not for him to swim, but simply to see. The silence you feel is not the light turning away.

It is the light standing still, closer than your next breath, waiting for you to stop striving and simply notice it is there. The prayer was never lost; it was already answered by a presence that refuses to leave.
