the terror that your child will one day speak your name with a voice you no longer recognize as your own

Loving When the Voice Changes

The afternoon light is flat and honest, revealing the dust motes dancing in the air and the slow erosion of things we thought were permanent. You carry a specific terror now: that the child you hold will one day speak your name with a voice you no longer recognize as your own.

A voice of distance, or judgment, or cold forgetting. The middle of the day is when this fear feels heaviest, because there is no morning hope left and no evening rest yet.

Just the long, quiet work of loving someone who is slowly becoming a stranger. But listen.

There is a mercy inside you that does not depend on their recognition. A grace that will be entirely with you, protecting you even if the bond feels broken.

The light does not vanish when the voice changes. It waits in the silence between your heartbeats, steady and unmoved.

You are not defined by how they say your name, but by the love you hold ready regardless of the sound.
