the silent rehearsing of your own apology for existing before anyone has even accused you

The Apology For A Crime That Does Not Exist

It is late, and the house is quiet enough to hear the rehearsal begin. You are practicing the speech you will give when someone finally asks why you take up so much space.

You are building a case against yourself before anyone has even brought a charge. But the light does not require a defense.

It simply says: go home to your own people and tell them how much the light has done for you. You do not need to prove you are worthy of the air you breathe.

The mercy is already there, waiting in the dark, larger than any verdict you could write for yourself. The apology you are writing is for a crime that does not exist.
