rehearsing a confession in the shower so the sound of running water hides the shake in your voice, then turning the tap off and realizing you still cannot say it out loud

The Father Ran Before You Spoke

The water runs hot, steam filling the small room, hiding the shake in your voice as you rehearse the words you need to say. You practice until the apology feels smooth, until the confession sounds like something you could actually speak.

But then you turn the tap off. The silence rushes back in, heavy and sudden.

And the words die in your throat, unable to cross the air. There was a father who saw his son coming home from a long way off — broken, rehearsing a speech about unworthiness.

Before the first syllable could be spoken, before the shame could be fully voiced, the father ran. He did not wait for the performance to end.

He ran to meet the stumbling words with open arms. Your voice may fail you in the quiet.

Your courage may fracture when the water stops. But the light does not need your speech to be perfect to hear you.

It was already running toward you while you were still in the shower.
