the specific shame of rehearsing your voice in the shower so you don't stutter when they ask how your day was

You Do Not Have to Get It Right

The water is still running, but you have stopped singing. You are practicing the one sentence they will ask tonight: 'How was your day?' You rehearse the cadence, the pause, the tone, trying to sand down the stutter before you step out of the steam.

It feels like a performance you are failing before it even begins. But the light does not need your rehearsal.

It does not require your voice to be smooth to hear your heart. There is a version of you that does not need to prepare to be loved.

The light sees the person behind the practiced words and calls that one whole. You do not have to get it right tonight.

You only have to come out of the bathroom and let yourself be found.
