burying your last living parent and becoming the oldest generation

The Torch Was Passed To You

The sun is setting, and with it, a whole generation has slipped beneath the horizon. You are now the oldest.

The hands that once held yours are still, and the silence in the house feels different tonight—heavier, final. It is the exhale after a lifetime of holding your breath, waiting for a voice that will not speak again.

But listen closely to the quiet. The light that lived in them did not vanish when they took their last breath.

That same light lives inside you now, unbroken and undimmed. You are not standing alone in the dark; you are standing in the place where their light now shines through your eyes.

The torch was not dropped; it was passed. You do not have to become the light tonight; you only have to let it shine through the grief.

The night is here, but so is the One who holds the keys of death and life.
