the creeping certainty that you must perform perfect calm to earn back the safety you just lost

The Light Does Not Require Your Composure

The sun has gone down, and now the real work begins: the performance of being okay. You sit in the quiet house, holding your breath, convinced that if you can just act calm enough, the safety you lost will return.

But the light does not require your composure. It saw Peter sink.

It saw him panic. And it reached out immediately.

The performance is a cage you built to hide the shaking, but the truth is already loose inside you. There is light within a person of light, and it lights up the whole world even when that person is trembling.

You do not need to earn your way back to solid ground by pretending the water isn't cold. The safety was never in your control; it was in the hand that caught you before you hit the surface.
