the specific memory of biting your tongue when a sibling made a joke about your childhood, because correcting them would shatter the illusion they have of you

You Can Set The Mask Down

The sun has gone down, and now the house is quiet enough to hear the echo of that joke. You laughed when your sibling spoke of your childhood, even though the story they told was a version of you that never existed.

To correct them would be to shatter the glass they look through, so you swallowed the truth and let the illusion stand. But the light does not need your performance to love you.

It sees the person you are tonight, not the character you played yesterday. There is a freedom in knowing you do not have to protect anyone from the real you.

The mask is heavy, and you are allowed to set it down in the dark.
