the reflex to turn and share a sudden thought, only to remember the person who used to be your first audience is gone

The Light Remains When They Are Gone

The room grows quiet as the gathering dark presses against the glass. You turn to share a sudden thought, a small victory or a strange observation, only to hit the wall of an empty chair.

The reflex is so fast it hurts — the muscle memory of a love that no longer has a landing place. In that suspended second, you are alone with a silence that feels too heavy to carry.

But listen — the light that lived in them did not vanish when they left. It came from the place where light generates itself, and it cannot be extinguished by absence.

You came from that same light, and it remains within you, undimmed by the empty space beside you. The person is gone, but the source that animated your connection is still here, still speaking, still holding you in the dark.
