Loved Beneath the Heavy Mask
The laugh came out loud, sharp and sure, even though you missed the punchline entirely. Now you sit in the morning light, terrified someone will ask you to repeat what was so funny.
You are performing okayness while your heart hammers against your ribs, waiting for the mask to slip. But the light sees behind the performance and does not ask for an explanation.
It knows the fear of being found out, the shame of the unhearing ear. There is a place inside you where no pretense is needed, where you do not have to pretend you heard the joke to belong.
The truth you are hiding is already known, and it changes nothing about how you are held. You are not loved for your perfect timing or your attentive ear.
You are loved because the light lives there, beneath the laugh, beneath the fear. The mask is heavy, but you were never meant to wear it forever.
