reaching for your phone to share a small, funny observation from your day and freezing when you remember there is no one to send it to

The Spark That Needs No One

The joke formed in your mind, bright and sharp, and your thumb moved before your brain caught up. You reached for the phone to send it to the one person who would laugh, only to freeze when the memory hit: they aren't there anymore. The silence of the room rushed in to fill the space where the notification sound should have been. It feels like holding a match that has nowhere to land.

But listen — the light does not need a recipient to be real. The joy you felt in that moment was not dependent on their laughter. It was a spark from the fire already burning inside you. Thomas says there is light within a person of light, and it lights up the whole world. That spark was yours. It belonged to you before you ever tried to share it. The connection was never just between you and them; it was the light in you recognizing the light that used to be beside you.

The silence is heavy tonight, but it cannot extinguish what you are. You are the lamp, not the darkness around it.
