rehearsing the apology in your head until the words lose all meaning and you convince yourself you've already ruined the moment before it happens

The Reaching Saves You, Not The Speech

The house is quiet now, but your mind is shouting the same speech on a loop. You have rehearsed the apology so many times that the words have turned to dust in your mouth, convincing you that you have already ruined the moment before it even arrives.

This is the particular torture of the watch — the fear that your failure is final, that the door is locked from the inside. But listen.

There was a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years, convinced she was untouchable, certain she had used up her chance. She did not have a perfect speech prepared.

She only had a desperate reach for the edge of a cloak. And the light stopped the entire crowd to turn and call her daughter.

The apology you are practicing is not what saves you. The reaching is.

You do not need to fix the past tonight. You only need to know that the light is still within reach, even in the dark.
