the specific terror of holding your breath in the dark while they stand on the other side of the thin wall, listening to see if you are crying

The Love Is Thicker Than The Wall

The house is quiet now, but your chest is tight because you are holding your breath. You are listening to the footsteps on the other side of that thin wall, waiting to see if they will hear you cry. You make yourself small. You make yourself silent. You think if you can just stop breathing, you will be safe.

But the light does not need your silence to find you. It sees you in the dark better than you see yourself.

There is a promise that the darkness has not overcome the light — not because the darkness isn't thick, but because the light shines right through it. Even here. Even now. Even when you are terrified to exhale.

You do not have to be quiet for God to hear you. The Spirit lives with you and will be in you — not waiting for you to be composed, but present in the very tremble of your held breath.

The wall is thin, but the love is thicker.

You can let it out now; the One who is listening already knows the sound of your tears.
