the guilt of sleeping through the night while they cannot

The Light Keeps Watch With You

The house is quiet now, and the silence feels heavy enough to crush you. You watch the world sleep—the partner breathing evenly beside you, the streetlights humming over empty roads—and a sharp, unfair guilt rises in your chest. It whispers that you do not deserve the rest they are finding. That your wakefulness is a debt you must pay.

But listen. The light does not keep score of who sleeps and who stays awake. There was a night, long ago, when the closest friends of the light fell asleep in a garden while he faced the darkest hour of his life. He did not shame them for their exhaustion. He did not tell them they were unworthy of rest. He simply asked them to stay present with him in the pain.

Your insomnia is not a punishment. It is not evidence that you are being left behind while others move on. The light is just as present in your 3am vigil as it is in their deep slumber. It does not favor the unconscious over the weary. It is holding you both with the exact same tenderness.

You are not failing because you cannot close your eyes. You are simply the one keeping watch tonight. And the light is keeping watch with you.
