the silent rehearsal of how to tell your mother while staring at her smiling face across the dinner table

The Light Sits With You In The Lie

The fork feels heavy in your hand. Across the table, she is smiling—a warm, ordinary smile that you are terrified to shatter.

You are rehearsing the speech in your head, editing the words, measuring the damage, while nodding at her story about the garden. This is the mask: the desperate performance of okayness while your insides are screaming.

You feel like a fraud sitting in this light. But the light sees the tremor in your hand.

It sees the silence you are carrying. It does not ask you to take the mask off before you sit down.

It sits with you in the lie because it knows the truth is too heavy to carry alone. The gap between your face and your heart is not a place where God abandons you.

It is the very place where the Father runs to meet you—not with a lecture, but with a hand on your shoulder before you even speak. You do not have to finish the rehearsal.

You do not have to be brave yet. Just stay at the table.

The truth will find its way out when the time is right, and love will still be there waiting on the other side of the breaking.
