being sober and finding the world unbearably flat

The Light Before the First Drink

The day is closing its eyes, and the world feels flat now that the noise has stopped. Without the blur, the edges are too sharp, and the silence is heavy enough to crush a person.

But the light does not need the world to be bright to be real. It was there before the first drink, and it is here in this sober, aching quiet.

The darkness has not overcome it — it cannot make the light less true just because you can see the floorboards clearly tonight. You are not empty because the haze is gone; you are full of a presence that no substance could ever give.
