The Light Was Already There
The afternoon sun is unforgiving. It exposes the dust on the shelves and the fatigue in your bones.
You are moving through the middle of the day, and in this long, quiet stretch, a fear takes hold: that your children are learning to hide their pain because you were too tired to see it. That your exhaustion became a wall they learned not to climb.
But listen. The light does not require your alertness to find them.
There is a lamp that can be lit in the darkest corner of the house, and a search that sweeps carefully until what is lost is found. You do not have to be perfect to be present.
You only have to stop. The light was already in the room with them while you slept.
It was watching over what you missed. Your failure to see did not leave them alone.
It simply means the search is still underway.
