the phantom ringing in your pocket, checking to see if the silence means you've been forgotten

The Silence Is Not Absence

The afternoon stretches long, and the silence in your pocket begins to feel like an accusation. You reach for the phone again, not because it rang, but because the quiet has started to whisper that you have been forgotten.

That no one is thinking of you right now. But the light does not measure its care by the frequency of your notifications.

It is present in the very hum of the room, in the dust motes dancing in the shaft of sun, in the breath you are taking while you wait. Jesus once told a man he healed to go home and tell everyone how much the Lord has done for him — to speak the mercy he had already received, even before the world acknowledged it.

You do not need a ringtone to prove you are held. The light came from the place where it generated itself, and it lives in you now, independent of anyone else's attention.

The silence is not absence. It is the space where you learn to hear the voice that never stopped speaking your name.
