hiding how much you drink from the people who love you

The Light Loves the Person Behind the Mask

The afternoon is long, and the mask you wear to get through it is heavy. You smile at the people who love you while hiding the bottle that keeps you standing.

You think if they saw the thirst, they would turn away. But the light does not demand you be dry before it comes near.

There is a promise that out of fullness, grace is given in place of grace already given — not once, but again and again. The cup you are trying to fill yourself is leaking, and the light knows.

It sees the performance and loves the person behind it. You do not have to pretend to be enough for the sun to shine on you.

The light is not afraid of your hidden things.
