The Light Remains When Performance Stops
The afternoon hums with the noise of everyone else's needs, and you feel the quiet panic rising in your chest. One more 'yes' feels like it might break you, but the thought of saying 'no' terrifies you more.
You imagine that if you stop performing, the silence that follows will prove you were never really part of the family. That the love was conditional on your utility.
But listen — the light does not need your exhaustion to stay close. There was a father who saw his son coming home from a long way off.
He did not wait for the son to finish his apology or prove he had changed. He ran.
Before the speech, before the promise to do better — he ran. The silence after you say 'no' is not abandonment.
It is the space where the real relationship begins. The one who loves you is not afraid of your boundaries.
If your 'no' drives them away, they were never holding you anyway. The light remains when the performance stops.
