the moment you rehearse the confession in your head and hear only their silence or their footsteps walking away

The Light That Stays When Others Leave

It is late, and the house is quiet enough to hear the rehearsal begin. You speak the words you wish you had said, or the apology you need to give, and in your mind, you play out their response.

You hear the silence. You hear the footsteps walking away.

The fear tells you that if they really knew the weight you carry, they would leave. But there is a voice that speaks before the silence falls.

It says: neither do I condemn you. The light does not walk away from the mess.

It stays. It bends down.

It writes in the dust while the accusers leave, one by one, until there is no one left but you and the one who refuses to abandon you. Your shame is not strong enough to scare off the love that is already in the room.

You are not alone with the echo of departing feet. You are with the one who sat through the worst night and called you friend anyway.
