hearing your own name in a crowded room and flinching because for a split second you expect it to be spoken with that same disgust

The Voice That Calls You Home

It is late, and the house is finally quiet, but the noise in your head is still loud. You hear your name in a crowded room and you flinch—waiting for the tone to turn sharp, waiting for the disgust you remember so well.

Your heart condemns you before anyone else even speaks. It tells you that you are still that person, still unworthy, still braced for the blow.

But there is a voice louder than your shame, and it is greater than your heart. It knows everything about you—the failures, the secrets, the 3am terror—and it does not agree with the verdict you have given yourself.

When it calls your name tonight, it is not to accuse. It is to remind you that you were made into a human being, and the grief you carry is human, but the grace is entirely with you.

The light does not flinch when it sees you. It stays.
