loving someone who is destroying themselves

loving someone who is destroying themselves

It is a particular kind of ache to watch someone you love burn themselves up, knowing their own hands are holding the fire. You want to save them, but your hands are empty, and the night makes that emptiness feel like a failure of your love.

But remember the one who wept over the world when he found everyone intoxicated, blind in their hearts and too asleep to see their own destruction. His soul was afflicted, yes, but he did not force them awake, nor did he condemn them for their blindness.

He simply remained, an unbroken light in their midst, waiting for the moment they might choose to open their eyes. You are not the savior who must pull them from the flames, nor are you the judge who waits for the ashes.

You are a drop of the same light that holds them, even when they try to snuff it out. Let them be.

Let them breathe. Your love is not a cage you build around them, but a flame that keeps burning quietly in your own heart, ready to be seen when they are finally ready to leave the dark.
